Can’t find a job? Why not create your own!

Are you struggling to land a job or find one that fits your skills and experience? Have you thought about creating your own?

You may have a once in a lifetime game changing idea but more likely, you have a hobby or interest that you can turn into a job. The good news is that the gig, remote and online economy make running your own business more possible than ever.

Three things to get you thinking:

1. Start with what you love, but don’t get too stuck on it.

  • What you love is often what you’re good at and what you spend a lot of time on. But you also need to think about where you can fill a need and make money.
  • To get you started, check out our Getting to know yourself video.

2. What and where is the need?

  • If you can fill a need, this could be the start of creating your own job.
  • Think about what you notice in your community, other jobs you’ve had or a service you’ve used. Was there something missing or needing improvement?
  • Examples: Maybe you love gardening and you’ve noticed the local schools, cafés or other businesses need garden maintenance – maybe starting your own garden maintenance or mowing business is a possibility. If you are crafty or artistic, it could be making and selling things that people need. Or maybe you are great at technology and can offer your IT services in your community.

3. Do you have what it takes?

  • If creating your own job or starting a business is just about having a good idea, then why doesn’t everyone do it? The truth is there are attributes and skills you’ll need to run a successful business, no matter how small.
  • Check out the Should I start my own business? article on Workforce Australia to see if you have what it takes to go it on your own.
