Your first day on the job

The first day of work at your new job can be a bit nerveracking. Below are some tips to make sure you can hit the ground running.

Tips for making a good impression

  1. Get prepared the night before

This includes laying out your clothes, organising transport and setting an alarm (if necessary!) This takes the stress out of getting ready for work and means you'll arrive more relaxed and ready to work.

  1. Bring a pen and notepad to take notes.

On your first day in a new job you will receive a lot of information. It's a good idea to take notes so you remember everything. This avoids you having to ask the same question more than once as this can be frustrating for employers.

  1. Listen and ask questions.

When someone is speaking to you it's important to actively listen to them. Show interest in what they are saying and ask relevant questions. Clarify anything you don’t understand.

Your employer will appreciate you asking questions. It shows your willingness to do a good job and will reduce errors or misunderstandings.

Questions to ask on your first day

Some topics and questions you may want to ask about:

  • Duties – Find out about the range and type of tasks you will be doing.
  • Workplace policies – Find out about your workplace's policies and procedures. This includes things like:
    • emergency procedures
    • social media and IT use
    • visitors in the workplace
    • meal and rest breaks and
    • public holidays and sick leave procedures.
  • Pay - What is your base rate of pay? How will you be paid? How often will you be paid? How will you receive your payslip (electronic or paper copy)?
  • Probation - Do you have to complete a probation period? If so, how does the probation work and how long is it?
  • Leave - Do you know what leave you’re entitled to and how you apply for leave?
